Despoiler Dev Update Video

Check out our new dev update video showing off never before seen content, additions, and improvements to despoiler in preparation for the steam release of DESPOILER, our Team Objective Arena Racer!

Been a while since our last update, and we've been working hard preparing DESPOILER for release. Here's a quick recap of where we're at with development and what to expect by the time we release (soon!)

The biggest highlight for anyone who played our old demo build is most likely that you can now aim up much more effectively haha.

We've also had the opportunity to hire some fantastic contractors over the last year (some are still working on things too) and wanted to give a shout out to them all here below:

John Eyre was responsible for the environment art re-work of our snow level and the new bridges too.

Paolo Boissel developed most of the environment art bespoke for the tropical and wasteland environments.

Francisco Alcalde modeled the mega-structures and tunnels you see around some of the levels and is currently working on new vehicle assets, as well as base and scrap mesh improvements!

The beauty of our game wouldn't have been possible without these talented artists so huge shoutout to them, and we look forward to working together again in the future.

We also brought Wilson (who you may know as the developer behind the incredibly promising fps Trepang 2) on-board to develop some custom ai opponents that can back-fill multiplayer matches. He's done a fantastic job developing ai that can do everything a human opponent can and they even deliver a very satisfying PvE play experience on their own!
Check out his game and if you ever need an ai developer we highly recommend him.

And last but not least we currently have Jonathan Peros working on our full audio re-design and we're looking forward to sharing more on that in the future.

Finally we're looking for some helpful beta testers so if you'd like to help out and play-test with us just tweet @elliotgraytho (our creative director) to get in touch!

The Despoiler Dev Team

What's next for Despoiler?

We made it through greenlight in a couple of weeks which was awesome!  Thanks everybody for the love!  So, what comes next?

Here's what we have planned for Despoiler in the near future.

Features planned for steam release:

  • Fixes for known issues
  • Dedicated server support
  • Performance optimization
  • New maps
  • Visual customisation
  • Seamless travel between levels (don't have to go back to main menu at the end of game)
  • Move to UE4.14 - with all the nice new optimizations and features it brings.
  • Improved Steam integration (joining from friends, achievements etc)

Features we're investigating, but no promises:

  • TrueSky integration (have you seen how beautiful this tech is?  - Elliot, graphics nerd)
  • True Volumetric Lighting
  • Match replay
  • Stat tracking
  • Progression system
  • Other platforms (let us know what you'd like to see first)

We're super excited to keep making Despoiler the best it can be.  Remember, the alpha is yours to keep and play forever.  It will never stop working.  Steam here we come.

Thanks friends,

Alpha time!

Greenlight is live and the Alpha is available.  And our sick new Gameplay trailer is online too!  Check it out above!

This trailer was edited by our Artist, Harrison, with mad sound mix by the talented Jesse Sidders who was a pleasure to work with!

So, what even is our game?

Game-mode - How does it work?
In Despoiler, teams scavenge valuable scrap from the level, and the team with the most at the end of a (15min) match wins.
Scrap can be found lying about the environment - left by the miners who've long vacated the lands.  Their old silos are also still full of the stuff, so tear them apart with your weaponry and make it rain.
You carry the scrap on the hull of your hovercraft where it absorbs damage, functioning like armour.  Careful though, because it's also heavy and the more you have the heavier and slower your vehicle will get.
Once you drop scrap off to your base, your team will start unlocking utilities and upgrades.  Careful though, re-spawning costs your team some scrap - meaning your team progress can be set back if you die too much.

Six Utilities

  1. Quick Drop - Drop all carried scrap instantly.  Good for speedy getaways or faster resource gathering.
  2. Nitrous - For when you... feel the need... for speed.  Sorry.  I'll show myself out
  3. Dash - A moment of instant acceleration.  Good for agility in fights, and for getting moving quickly.
  4. Jump - Also good in fights, but also great for taking shortcuts that might be otherwise inaccessible.  We'll leave those for you to Discover on your own though.
  5. Drop Shield - Drop a shield to protect you while scavenging, defend your base, or to tip the balance of a team-fight.
  6. EMP - an emp mine that's dropped behind your vehicle that, when hit, disables an enemy craft for a short moment.  Great for escaping pursuers.  Only lasts for a very short time so make sure you capitalize on hits effectively.

Three Vehicles

  1. Hovercraft - The starting vehicle for all Despoiler's.  Most well rounded of the lot.  Competitive fighter.
  2. Harvester - Armed with what is essentially a gigantic shotgun, the harvester is excellent at demolishing scrap scrap silos around the level, and stealing enemy scrap.  Quite weak against other vehicles, however, so be ready to escape if the enemy tries to gank you.
  3. Tank - Does damage.  Lots of damage.  3x health of the hovercraft, and can kill a hovercraft in two hits.  Slow movement and turn speed make it vulnerable to enemies that can get up close and behind.  Also, tanks can damage themselves if their shots land too close.  Try to keep distance between you and the enemy.

Remember to vote for us on Greenlight so we can continue to develop Despoiler further, if you like.

And check out our indiedb page too if you so desire.  There're some high res screenshots there, and we'll be updating it regularly with new goodies too.

Have fun!
